excellent - figured the weight of the TT and the slab would be sufficient, but I saw some Amazon reviews indicating the need for attachment for proper dampening.

****If anyone here wants a granite base for their turntable, now is your chance!! Let me know if you want one and the size you need (width x depth--in inches) by responding to this post.

I will gladly give these away to the music board Audiophile Thread regulars...(one per music board member, please).

As of now, I have HopefulDoc and HerbertFest08 on the reserve list.

I figured 14" deep by 18" wide should be good for the Pro-Ject Debut table. That will give you 3/4" on either side, and not exceed the usual width of an audio rack (18"). That also gives about an inch of protrusion in the front if you want (for appearance--if you want it flush with the front, just shift the table and let the slab protrude 2" in the rear and 0" in the front).

If anyone wants a larger cut (if your table is larger than a Pro-Ject), or if you want a couple more inches for looks, let me know--I'll have it cut special for you.

I will probably just do a flat edge around all 4 sides (no bevel)--as a bevel on all 4 sides with this many pieces means a lot of cuts--and it will start to add up quick. My granite slab is the thicker of the standard sizes (3cm).

Until the granite guy comes to measure this week, I don't know exactly how many I will be able to get out of my "waste", but I am guessing 4-6.

Also--sorry out of towners--I am not shipping them (they will break). Since I do travel a good bit throughout south Louisiana weekly, I will gladly drop one off within a 120 mile radius of NOLA....now how's THAT for service!!

As usual, all I ask is for a "Roll Tide" as I hand it off to you

Here is a pic of my actual slab that will be cut...

Just seeing this. I'll measure, too, but those seem just about right.

But a sad update- I awoke to this text Thursday morning:
Hey, just so you're not mad/confused, when you get home you'll see your amp is unplugged. I tried my best and was very careful so I don't think I messed anything up. But at around 2:30 this morning the speakers were making a very loud popping noise and it started to smell like early signs of smoke. So I unplugged everything but the amp was still glowing blue on the front. I felt it and it was really hot, so I unplugged it completely and pulled it out to cool off.

Klaus assured me that he'd get it back to me within 3-4 days of shipping it out. I haven't had time to ship it yet (working 16 hour nights leaves days free, but I've been to exhausted to get to any shipping store. I didn't even leave the hospital this morning- just sleeping here today). I figure I'll get it out in the next day or two and have a new board dropped in it. He asked for my cables to/from it to be assured that it's not a simpler problem. But the good news is just how concerned he was and how quickly he wants to make it right- I even told him it's no big rush. I was just getting used to it.

Of note, I had the speakers unplugged and just TV audio playing. My roommate/brother (who sent the text) plays music, but he's never considered himself much of an audiophile. As we sat listening to TV audio and listened to a song or two off a streaming app, he looked at me and said, "Man, I really miss your big speakers sound. This isn't nearly as good."
Sure, that's a no brainer. But coming from him after 30 seconds of listening, it made me kind of happy. And I felt somewhat justified for the amount of dollars into my system I'm at at this point.

And Marco, surely you accept some certain 6 pack of beer or bottle of liquor for your troubles, no?

While that is very thoughtful of you, you don't need to get me anything...I do this to help you young'uns get started.

In 5-7 years when you drop $50k+ on the B&W 800 (I know you will) and the gear to drive them, you can pay it back by helping a young resident/student get his audio rig started.

Finally sobered up!

Actual measurements for the Nomad are 13.5" x 18.5". Not sure how much extra length you think is needed on the slab.

Damn to bad I'm here in little Rock. I've been waiting on my piece for like 2 weeks I called and asked if they had a chance to get it to it she said not yet and hung up lol. Doesn't sound good for me. I might need to try another place, moving in my house in 3 weeks ready to turn this bad boy over half way.. And start posting pics ha. How's your room coming along Marco?

Marco (and anyone else who wants to chime in), I would humbly like to ask some advice on audio components/setup.

So I have room in my house that I have recently begun to repurpose by relocating a hodgepodge of audio equipment that has been either gathering dust or simply going unused. Currently I have a set of powered speakers (Kanto Yumi w/ Kanto powered sub), a Rega Planar 3 TT w/ Exact cartridge, Schiit Mani preamp, Panasonic DVD player I'm using as a CD player and an extra SONOS connect I got as part of a Beta test group for them.

I now have the upgrade bug. First off, a flat panel TV is going on the wall above the console where the audio equipment resides (it is a 72" console with shelving enclosed by glass panel doors). I am not planning on a home theater system for this room - the TV will be primarily for viewing sports, and I have a nice home theater system in another room already, and the console mentioned above is not deep enough to house a home theater receiver.

The room is an upstairs room, nearly a square 18 x 19 ft with library bookshelves occupying a significant portion of one of the long walls and the other with no permanent fixtures. The entry door to the room is on the same wall as the console mentioned above, and there would be room for either bookshelf type or monitor speakers on stands or floor towers on either side of console (more on that later). The ceilings are 10 ft. and flooring is tongue and groove pine with OSB subfloor over ceiling joists. There is a fairly large upholstered sofa, in addition to an ottoman and chair approximately 10 ft from the music source. There are also a couple of end tables and some lamps placed throughout. There are two standard width long windows on the back wall. Walls are standard residential grade gypsum board with modern dry wall texture and latex paint.

The console has about 12.5" of useable depth for any single component, and as such, I have my eye on the Quad Vena integrated amp that you have recommended throughout this thread. As for speakers, I may have to make some compromises here in the name of aesthetics as the wife generally has strong opinions about room decor. I have heard you say "...there is no replacement for displacement..." to paraphrase, so of course I am thinking of floor standing towers, this however may be a hard sell.

So to get to the end of the novel I'm writing here, (a) am I asking too much of this amplifier from a power standpoint for a room this size (b) are there bookshelf type of speakers (think Focal Chorus, Klipsch RP-160M, Cambridge Audio AeroMax2, etc) that can provide very good sound with adequate and accurate base (c) Do I just need to really insist on a tower speaker, and if yes can you recommend anything in the $750/pr range - if you say "no, spend more", I can go more though I have some really big college and parochial school tuition bills right now (four kids) and am under self imposed austerity measures (relatively speaking of course.

Anyways, thanks for reading my book, and would definitely appreciate any input, particularly on the speakers I have mentioned above or certainly better options.

Papi....

I have the quad and my living room is bigger than yours by a couple feet. It pushes vandersteen 1Ci towers.
I am about 10ft from the speakers, when they are moved back. When I listen they are about 8ft away. The vandys come with specified speaker placement instructions for the speakers/stands.

That being said the vandys are $1250 a pair plus another $120 for the stands. Before I went that route I was looking at the Elac F6 towers. They go for $759 a pair on musicdirect. The vena may not be enough power for them though b/c they are 6 ohms. Marco recommended the peach tree nova 65se I think to go with them. It's an integrated amp like the quad. That being said I'm not sure if they still make them. I'm sure you could still find one somewhere though.

If you go back to page 70-72ish in the thread Marco gives me a good bit of recs on amps and speaker combos. Might want to read up moving forward from page 70.

Welcome to the club

Alright kids...the granite cutter just left. It looks like I will have a good bit of extr granite. He says probably at least 10 slabs of 18"x15" should be able to be done.

If you want a specific cut, let me know by Friday afternoon so he can cut your size. It will be installed at my place next weekend, but he is cutting it Monday or Tuesday.
