I have had speakers set up where they had absolutely no low end--just dead. Then I moved the chair back 3 feet and the bass came alive--like flipping a switch.
Room placement is critical--especially the low end. Bass waves are big and long, and depending where you sit and where you place the speaker, you could be just inside or just outside the sweep of the bass waves.
If you really decide to get into this, I can recommend a few books to read about set up in rooms.
Instead of dropping $50k on better amps or sources, I decided to spend it on the most important piece of the audio chain--the room. When done properly, your system will "come alive".
I have heard $5000 systems in well done rooms that sound amazing...I have also heard $300,000 systems that were poorly set up in bad rooms and they were just lifeless.
You have good gear--get the most out of it with the placement.

Oh just by listening tonight man I can tell this is just the beginning for me, definitely send the book info when free. Listening to maggot brain now pretty intense

Do you know the supposed story behind the recording of Maggot Brain?
Supposedly the guitarist had taken a massive dose of LSD, and just before going into the studio to record, the band informed him that his mother had died. Totally tripping, and given that news, he decided to stay and record--and that soulful masterpiece is the result.
But his mother was actually alive and well!
Or at least that's the story that's been told for years

I'll try to find my books tomorrow and post the titles for you.
Some of it gets pretty technical. You don't have to do everything the guides say, but once you understand the theory of why and how sound is being affected, you can then apply it to whatever degree you want to in your own environment.

I was looking at this amp would I be able to add a sub if it was something I wanted to do later
Posted on 8/5/17 at 1:37 am to davidlsu
Yes you can. On the back of the Quad, you will see a pair of RCA jacks that says "pre out". That can be used to run to a powered sub, or even to a power amp, if you ever decide to get a stand alone power amp, thus relegating the Quad to use as just a pre amp.

As subs go, Vandersteen makes a killer sub. It differs from most in that instead of a big 12" or 15" woofer, it uses 3-8" woofers.
This allows for "faster" bass response. A large speaker is harder to move in and out--physics. But smaller ones can start and stop easier as they have less mass. In woofers, a giant sub can sometimes sound "muddy" or its bass seems to be "lagging" behind the bass from the main speaker. This is usually the result of big woofers trying to keep up with the speed of the mid and tweeters.
Vandersteen solves this by using multiple 8" instead of bigger drivers.
Their subs are very popular with the electrostatic speaker crowd and the planar speaker crowd (think Magneplanar, Sanders, and Martin-Logan)--these speakers use a thin film which vibrates for mids and usually a ribbon tweeter. The sound comes off these panels extremely fast, and a "fast" sub like Vandersteen is one of the few that can keep that pace.
If that makes sense...

Oh for sure makes a lot of sense, I meant to ask you what speakers are you running? The guys over at MD were giving me a hard time on getting the vandersteen Idk if they had a reason but they kept trying to push me to those sonus Faber I was telling you about. Some Chris guy and I almost got into it lol but they were helpful w other stuff glad I went thru them. Putting a sasha and digweed Northern exposure before bed

I use Focal Alto Utopias as my mains, but I also have Magneplanar 1.7, Zu Audio Omens, and Betsy Baffles.
They are all totally different designs.

Brother had his Yamaha receiver he wasn't using, I've been using it till I get my other in. If I notice a small pc of dust or lint on end of the cartridge what's the best way to get it off?

Blow on it.
And then just buy a small stylus brush for $10.

Did you get seemingly multiple push backs on your delivery date from Odyssey? I ordered back in the last week of March with an expected 6 week completion. He actually charged me close to a month ago and in the 3rd week of July told me, "probably 5 or 6 more days."
And did he give you a call before he shipped or anything like that? He's good at returning calls, but he's so dang busy right now that I'm just curious what your experience was.

Anyone suggest a light to attach or out next to turntable, noticed some of you guys had one that looked to clip on

I did not get any push backs but he was almost a good two months behind when I ordered, so I still had to wait a while before receiving my amp. It sucks to wait, but be patient, it will be worth it in the long run. I love my Khartago and it only seems to get better the more hours I put on it. I found the best time to get a hold of him on the phone was 1-2pm in the afternoon, but as you said, he does pretty good with returning calls. And he will provide you with detailed instructions and guidelines as far as breaking your amp in. It's pretty cool to hear it open up the way it does, almost like a flower blossoming. Congrats, you'll love your new piece!

Got this baby last week:
Unfortunately, we spent all weekend moving out of our old house, so I don't even have my turntable set up right now. I did get to listen to side A last week and it was glorious.

Turntable guys: Would you consider replacing a Teac TN-300 with a used Rega Planar 3 at $500 for the P3? Cartridge in the Rega is an older Shure V15 Type VxMR. I have a Nagakoa MP 110 I could also use for the Rega. Assuming excellent condition?
