Audio question: Ipod to stereo via USB-to-RCA adaptor?

Question to anybody who has tried this before:
I have an old iPod classic and if I have wanted to run it though my home stereo I have always connected it through the headphone jack. This severely compromises the audio quality as that jack converts the sound to a headphone signal. What I want to do is run the iPod through the USB port and convert it to an RCA input. I've never tried this and don't even really know if that will work.
If you run your iPod through an old-style stereo with RCA connections, how do you do it?
Here is the USB-to-RCA adaptor that I found online. Is this what I need to do it?
Thanks in advance for any advice.

Post this on the tech board, but you might want to try to find an old ipod docking station on ebay or amazon

Maybe post this question in the Audiophile thread?
I want to know the answer too because even though my receiver is new enough to have a USB port there isn't a way to plug in my phone without it charging, which I've heard is bad for the battery when I have it plugged in at 100% charge.

What I've come to figure out is that it's kind of a losing proposition unless I buy an expensive new receiver / amplifier. There does not appear to be any kind of adapter that will convey the iPod signal through the 30-pin/USB port without pretty much the same sound quality loss that I'm getting now from running the connection through the headphone jack. They do make receivers that support both USB input and a turntable (and of course CD) and that's what I would need to play all of my media through it. I may end up doing that someday but I don't currently have an extra grand sitting around for that and if I'm going to upgrade I'm going to want to go high quality.

You're not making much sense. The reason sound quality coming out of the 3.5mm jack is poor is because you are using the iPod's dated and cheap internal DAC (digital to analog converter). Using a 30 pin to rca cable won't change that. The only reason to take the signal from the 30pin connector is to get the pure digital signal to use an external DAC. I think you need the CCK camera adaptor cord to get the digital signal. You would also need an external DAC which can run from $50 to several thousand. The DAC will then convert the signal to analog and you can run it to your receiver/amp.

If your receiver doesn't have an iPhone/iPod compatible usb port, then you need this plugged into you iPhone and then a usb cable from this to your receiver if you have a USB input, but it is not iPhone compatible:
Lightning to USB Camera Adaptor

The exact same way you would a smartphone or anything else with a 3.5 mm earbud/headphone jack. All you need is a 3.5 mm to RCA cable or adapter. Turn the volume on your device all the way up and use the volume on stereo to control loudness. That's the exact way I have my flat screen TV and sometimes my Galaxy 5 (which has a good DAC built in) hooked to my old Yamaha amp.
Here's a shitload of them

I don't think you read his entire post. He's trying to avoid using the headphone jack because of the lack of sound quality associated with that.

Which is exactly why I asked the question. But thanks for your input, sir.

I'm interested in getting an answer too. I'm not looking to spend a ton of $$ on a DAC if I don't have to.

I should have explained further. I meant that the question did not make sense because the 3.5mm jack output is the same thing as an RCA output from the ipod. Both would be analog signals generated by the ipod's DAC. If you want better sound quality for your stereo system you need a better digital to analog conversion. This can be accomplished by this:
Ipod CCK
and
Schiit Modi 2
Does your stereo system have RCA inputs only?

Yes and I guess I didn't make it clear enough that I already came to the realization that the RCA plug and the 3.5 jack will both render the same audio quality. Like I was saying, the best solution I could see would be to just get an upgraded receiver with all the ports intrinsic. I was hoping to just be able to buy an adapter on the cheap to make it work but I have figured out that there would have to be a converter in the mix.
I'm not all that tech-savvy if that is not immediately apparent.
I appreciate the help though.
