I'm being doing the research on these for about a year now - by consensus, the Sony are the leader in "music" quality - and comparable in most other relevant areas - build quality, comfort, etc. They may also lead in some of the features of the ANC - with the "pause" feature to listen to announcements and so forth.
However, you're right - the pairing with multiple devices is what has held me off and keeps Bose as my slight leader. Now, I may end up going with the Sony because I rarely change devices - but once I get the headphones, I'm going to want to use them with everything. Sort of a Catch-22 at this point - I don't want the Bose because I know the music quality will be compromised, but when I get the Sonys, I will want the Bose "pair with everything" feature.
