Question: if she had not been so self-destructive, and continued in a somewhat normal path, would anyone outside of the UK know who Adele is these days? Would she have been a "flavor of the month" and then banished to obscurity?
There were lots of white, female soul-ish vocalists coming up in Britain in the mid/late 2000s, of whom Winehouse was the standout. Would there have been room for two? Duffy had a nice hit with "Mercy", and there were others with popularity in UK, but nothing like what Winehouse got.
Or was Winehouse so popular because she was such a circus in her personal life?

Winehouse and Adele are different genres imho..
Winehouse is a fusion of Contemporary R&B, Funky Pop, Crossover Jazz,etc..and though somewhat unique to our era(with her followers now since), she was a next generational gamebreaker like a Billie Holliday, Sarah Vaughan, Nina Simone. But, I find American Macy Gray more like Winehouse than fellow Brit Adele.
Adele, despite breaking out with an Alt-Indie-esque 'Chasing Pavements' off 19, rose to superstar status behind 21's litany of greats which though more modern in sound, sorta presumes the world's greatest grand diva mantle away from Babs, Celine, etc..all dressed up with grand orchestration to accentuate the greatest instrument in the opera house/arena IE "her voice"...and with 25 continuing that course.

And her liver died about 4 years before that.
Such talent. Such addiction. A dangerous combination.

Extreme talent, such a waste.

Winehouse, unfortunately, a hot mess surrounded by enablers. That said, she was amazingly talented and unique for her time. Very sad

Winehouse had a unique raw talent that no other contemporary female UK singer is close to having.
Like Janis Joplin, she had the ability to sing one note and capture the listener.
No other female UK singer since Winehouse can do that.

I loved the way Winehouse sang and performed on stage and I won't compare her to Joss Stone but I am definitely happy that I recently discovered Joss Stone.
It's great to hear a white woman sing like that again.

I don't think I've ever seen a sextuple post before. I've seems couple of quadruple posts, but, wow.
