AIC, Pearl Jam (Mother Love Bone), and Soundgarden were all buds. Different members of the bands couch surfed at each others places.
AIC had the first mainstream grunge song with Man in the Box imo. It was labeled as heavy metal initially. Nirvana got big and they classified AIC as grunge after that.
