get a drum pad, sticks and a metronome
go four and four with each hand, develop your wrists, and a whip action
go up in speed
practice to weezer's blue album or something comparably similar and simple. get down the basics then go from there.

also, have money. this is an expensive hobby/career.

Rudiments and hand technique drills go a very long way. I would start by listening to an iPod and play all of your favorite songs and get use to the kit.

That's what I did. It also can't be stressed enough to learn how to hold the sticks and strike the drums. When I finally started paying attention to that (mainly how I hold my sticks) I improved tremendously.

You don't have to beat the hell out of the kit to get a good sound. I'm still a pretty heavy hitter but it is due to the sticks I play. 15 7/8" long 0.6" Diameter and I think they weigh like 1.5 ounces a piece. They'll tire you out quickly
