Ronson's a great guitarist, but come on. Bowie did amazing work without Ronson
RCA would not have renewed him, had he not come up with the Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars.
This 'amazing work' would more than likely never had come to fruition (as the life experiences which fueled it never would have taken place).

I think my experience is similar to yours. I liked some of his songs while growing up, and even as an actor, but never got the people who praised him as one of the greatest, which became a topic amongst my musician friends when he died.
At that time, I tried to give him a fresh listen, and pretty much felt the same once again.
But one day about six months ago, AXS TV played Ziggy Stardust in full, which I recorded, and played loud while working around the house. I was struck by the familiarity with so many of the songs, and also the story the performance told. It's like it finally clicked with me who he was as a performer in toto, and I gained a much greater respect for him in that regard.
Even if I wasn't a fan of his sound all the time, I could see what an innovative artist he was overall, and how so many people found inspiration in what he did.
