The parents sent their kids to the camp because they needed to lose weight. It went sideways because the new owner turned it into a boot camp.
Being fat was the primary joke of the entire film. It would never be made the same way today, not because it was "fat positive," but because it made fun of fatness just as much as it made fun of anything else.
A film today where a fat person is self-conscious about getting with the pretty girl because he/she's fat, like the good counselor in Heavyweights, would be excoriated by the left. His entire character arc could not exist today. Nevermind that he was also a straight white male, so he couldn't possibly be the hero without also being a total idiot.
