What makes Superman interesting is not that he's immensely powerful and can destroy all enemies; it's that he has a strict moral code that forces him to balance his powers to maintain that code. This is why him killing Zod was so fricking terrible at the end of Man of Steel.
This adherence to a moral code is also why Batman is so intriguing, but it's a different code and done so by a human trying to be powerful.
So one is trying to tame his powers while the other is trying to maximize them. It's a wonderful dynamic that plays perfectly to counterbalance the two characters to each other.
