John Wayne's best performance and John Ford's most beautiful film.
This movie is a hidden gem if you have never seen it. Hard to believe it didnt win any Oscars.
Top 5 western of all time, no doubt.

I don’t know if you can say it’s a hidden gem as it’s widely considered to be one of the greatest westerns ever made. I rank it right behind Once Upon a Time in the West. It’s fantastic.

I only say its a hidden gem because it doesnt get as much play as some of the other Wayne films. It didnt win any major awards. Its rarely on streaming or TBS/TNT. Im always surprised when i talk to movie fans that havent seen it, but they are out there.
I agree its hard to be a masterpiece and a hidden gem. But its an older movie and some people think Wayne movies are too cheesy. This one is darker and deeper.

Coincidently I've got it on my list. I'm watching An Innocent Man rn, in color. Watched Cold Vengence last night, also in color.
Just think, in 6 years it will be the 100 year anniversary of the Duke's first movie role. The Big Trail.

It features an ugliness of character that makes it less suited to easy viewing than many other Wayne films. Of course, that's part of what makes it so good.

This.
Ethan is an a-hole, but he’s also the most nuanced and compelling character that Wayne ever portrayed and Ford ever directed. He’s an antihero, which is a clear divergence from nearly all of his other protagonists.

greatest ending of a western IMO. It's been about 10 years since I've watched it so it's time for a rewatch. The ending frames are burned in to my memory.

People who have seen it agree its amazing. But a lot of film lovers havent seen it (based on my experience talking to people).

Everything from the wedding scene until the end credits is awesome. They run an emotional gambit.
