I like the philosophical debates, but with a movie like this, they are all opinions. And this thread got out of hand way before I got involved.
I love the:
Well IMO, I think this because of this.
Hmm, I never really thought of that. I kind of see what you are getting at there. But what it really says to me is this.
However, what we had here was:
I think this.
You're an idiot, clearly it is this.

The biologist wants to interact with the creature because that’s what he does.
Except that it runs in direct contrast to the behavior exhibited by the character in the preceding 30 minutes of the movie.
Seems that for some people the "philosophical questions" asked by this movie are enough to make up for the structural flaws of the script/plot and for others they flaws were to much to overcome

I don’t think it does. It’s the geologist who wants to run away, and the biologist goes along with him, mainly because he wants to be accepted (as established in their meal time encounter). Then, when they run from the pulse, it’s on the geologist’s suggestion, and they are clearly influenced by the pile of dead bodies. They run from the unknown, but the biologist still doesn’t assert himself. He’s along for the ride.
When he does encounter a live, new species, his curiosity wins out and it’s the first time he asserts himself all movie. Instead of listening to the geologist, who clearly wants no part of the animal, he investigates the first familiar thing he’s experienced in two years: being a biologist. His skills are finally of value, and he asserts his self worth… and promptly gets killed.
I don’t think this is a major “structural flaw.”

Well you don't think it's a flaw at all so major minor whatever isn't the issue.
As for the biologist just doing what the geologist says, it's pretty clear to me that he isn't just trying to be "accepted".
His facial features, actions and mannerisms show fear. He wants out of the situation just as much as the other guy.
Plus if he wants social acceptance, staying with the larger group of people and following their lead would have gained him more of that than following the 1 guy who already told him to frick off earlier in the movie.

Is it that unlikely that he was fearful at first and then he saw something that sparked the bioogist (doesn't he literally say something to that effect at the time) in him and he forgot his fear and became curious.

Sparked the biologist in him? I'm not a biologist, but I'd guess that majority of them, dealing with just life on this planet, don't reach out and try and pet unknown wild animals the first time they see them.
IIRC the biologist was talking to it like a pet right? "come here baby, I won't hurt you"
If his inner biologist came out, I think he would have been more careful when dealing with an alien life.
