"There is iron in your word of Death for all Comanche to hear, and so there is iron in your word of Life... The word of Ten Bears carries the same iron of Life and Death.""

One of my favorites. So many great lines.

Comanche raider:
“You damn fools! Ten Bears gonna want him a fresh woman. Fresh, that little gal will bring ten, maybe twelve horses. Now, if one of you has to, you can take that old woman over there. She might be worth, one donkey.”

Lone Watie after Jose sneaks up behind him and tells him Indians aren’t supposed to be easy to sneak up on:
“I’m an Indian, all right; but here in the nation they call us the "civilized tribe". They call us "civilized" because we're easy to sneak up on. White men have been sneaking up on us for years.”

As much as I love this great movie, I can’t believe that they couldn’t get someone a little more muscular to play Ten Bears. He has a sort of beer gut and his arms look spindly.

There is iron in my words of insult.

Early 70s. Not a lot of emphasis on working out.

Will Sampson was a big man. Recall he also played Chief in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest - he was 6'5"(or better) and over 250 pounds. He was a real cowboy, too. A bronc buster.

So, spindly arms and beer gut, he probably would have kicked your skinny white arse up and down the block.

Ten bears wasn't about being the most muscular guy... It was about his incredible screen presence and his ability to be the only real figure in the film to stand as an equal to Wales and command his respect as a Warrior.
