Came here to post this exact same thing, but you beat me to the punch. Werner Klemperer and John Banner both immigrated from Germany or Austria/Hungary and both served in the American Armed forces during WW2. Klemperer in the Pacific in the Army Special Services, and Banner was in the USAAF as a supply sergeant. Banner's family was decimated by the Holocaust.

I probably got my stories confused and he was at a sister camp to luft III, not luft III itself.
Either way, he had a much more intimate knowledge of what the set should look like than John Sturges.

Well, yeah. The same folks designed and built both camps. I certainly would have deferred to him (and the other Luft III survivors) over a set designer or other Hollywood fruit (NTTAWWT).
