Just saw it and I have to say it is now my favorite historical football movie of all time. Its pretty sad also. Ernie Davis would have been the best of all time.

Yea, I really liked it too but for some reason it wasn't that popular. It wasn't marketed very well. I have told my friends about it and none of them have even heard about it. Great movie, terrible advertising.

quote:Definitly great. I honestly never heard about it either. My parents told me about it and they said it was great so I got it. Fantasitic acting!

was about to start a thread about this, but found this tread.
I really enjoyed this movie. I can't believe ED isn't discussed more in sports mainstream. He should be a legend to many if this movie was accurate.

I thought it was nice what the Browns did for Davis. They ended up with a bad pick but stuck with him.

I was very impressed. It was a really good movie , and it didn't get much recognition.

It's got a bunch of historical accuracy flaws though.
Things like blending his last 2 seasons at Syracuse into 1.
How his cancer is delt with/discovered
The team doesn't actually eat BBQ after the Cotton Bowl. The black guys just went to an NAACP banquet.

Even with the dramatization of his career, it was a very moving story.
I felt that I needed my 15 year old daughter to watch this film. Not necessarily for the football, but for the way these athletes were treated while visiting the south to play football. I know there are more poignant movies for this, but I felt it would get the point across while keeping her interest.
I recommend this film to anybody.

Along the same lines as this, there is a Fox Sports (?) documentary about the 1951 University of San Fransisco football team. They had three future HOF players (Gino Marchetti, Ollie Matson, and Bob St. Clair), 10 total that went to the NFL. they went 9-0. But they had two black players on their team. And although they were invited to the Orange Bowl, they would have had to leave their black players. The team refused the invitation, went to no bowls, and had to disband the team the following year because of lack of funds.
My kids and I watched it last summer. The documentary said something about a movie being made.
