They fricked up. It was a mistake. A ham-handed approach that went wrong. Arkady was pissed about it.

But what was their goal in even approaching him there in the first place?

Centre superiors thought they could recruit him (him being pissed he was fired). Arkady had told them.it was a stupid idea. That's why he was pissed off with what happened.

Another question: what was the point of any plot with Stan's original wife?

Establishes strain from prior deep cover work. Makes him more susceptible to Nina's charms.

I guess, but they showed too much, IMO. Like, scenes of him going over to the boyfriend's house and stuff. Also, they showed way too much of Paige with Matthew - much more than was required to establish what was happening.

It's my main complaint (about a great show) - they really don't follow Mamet's prescription to ALWAYS BE MOVING THE STORY FORWARD. (Which is also disappointing because a lot of times, the dialogue actually sounds Mamet-ish).
