just watch the battlestar galactica miniseries from 03... then you will end up watching the entire series

Red State was a pretty good thriller by Kevin Smith...yes the same Kevin Smith that did Mallrats, Clerks, etc.
Transcendent Man is a good one that combines SciFi themes into a documentary film. Yes, that is SciFi documentary.
