There are at least 30 movies based on Stephen King books, maybe a handfull are any good.

(and I'm a King reader, just finished Dome, starting Tommyknockers for first time, Dead Zone next)

Ha changed it from 4 or 5 I see.

Dead Zone
The Shining
Salem's Lot (original)
Shawshank
Green Mile
This Mist ( I liked it, sue me)
Carrie
Creepshow
Creepshow II
Cat's Eye ( I really liked Quitters Inc.)
Stand By Me
The Running Man
It ( Falls apart in the end, but Pennywise is easily one of the scariest tv villains ever)
Misery
1408

I think that is more than a handful or the original 4 or 5 you stated and I am not sure there are any writers that have had as many decent to great movies.

I left off a few that plenty of people liked. I wasn't a big fan of the stand mini.I liked Rose Red, but that one is universally hated so I kept it off the list.

The Langoliers
Apt Pupil
Desperation
Thinner
Cujo
Hearts In Atlantis
Christine
Children Of The Corn
Firestarter
Maximum Overdrive (EMILIOOOOO)
Delores Claiborne
Storm Of The Century (very good mini)
Dream Catcher (DICK WINTERS!)
Secret Window

a few off the top of my head

regarding The Stand. Another possibility is taking it the "Harpers Island" route. A 1 season TV series. And i vote for AMC or FX to do this.
