Spinoff thread about movie costs

How could they have made movies like JAWS or series like Stargatae that still hold up today on a fraction of the money, but now can't make shi!t unless it costs 100X more?

Variety of factors at nearly every level that’s lead to it, biggest ones being studios consolidated into a few big players, with more focus on bigger returns on each movie - which has led to less movies being made and more budget being concentrated to those bigger movies. In part because they don’t want to risk on smaller films or upcoming visionary directors/ writers and in part because these high budgets make it a lot easier to hide the Hollywood accounting that they are all making a killing off of regardless of a movies success
Then there’s more front facing issues like general inflation, the rise of CGI use which has become more expensive than practical effects but are still more efficient to use in the studios eyes, and the decline in the physical media market doesnt allow for anything to have a second life and they do not allow anything to breathe in theaters before throwing it on a streaming service within 2 weeks
You could write a thesis on all the issues that play a part here

Still does not address why I have watched the Stargate series 4 times when they didn't need a green screen and something to make the stargate work. All you said is that Hollywood is stupid and a cash grab and mostly failing for my movie and series watching.

I’m just answering your question, those same issues roll downhill to TV
It’s not that they didn’t need it, they just didn’t have access to neither the budget or the tools available today, so they ran on a shoestring budget and had a long leash to build a narrative with low expectations and grow a fanbase over time
They could time warp all the same actors and writers of that show to today, and the show they would make would end up being a 6-8 episode season that immediately got into a world ending plot to gain quick viewers and then quickly cancelled when it didn’t have huge numbers because they next big thing would be in the pipeline

I mean do you want the answer or not

You miss the point the didn't need it and still holds up today.

Sounds like you just should’ve made a “I really like stargate” thread. Idk what you’re looking for here

I can pick others when you explain why I am wrong on this one, we will go one by one, with your expert knowledge it shouldn't be a problem for you. For your next assignment try Sanctuary.

Wrong about what? What argument do you think we’re having? I haven’t said anything about stargate not holding up man

To get out of the SYFY genre, how about James Bond, who hates the old ones vs the new ones.

You explaining why Hollywood needs 100X the money to make a quality product today, when a lot of people still love product from 20 years ago, hell look at the JAWS release numbers.

I’m explaining the difference in the atmosphere for making movies/TV today in comparison to that era to explain to you why it costs 100 times more and new shows feel more disposable
Jaws was released 50 years ago fwiw

Yet people point to pre 2000 moves as the golden era. Heck Casablanca is better than most of the stuff put out today. Hollywood is a beast that feeds on itself and puts out an inferior product.

the film, originally released in 1975, grossed $260.7 million domestically in its initial run, which is over $1.5 billion when adjusted for inflation according to Forbes.

Casablanca is one of the greatest movies ever made, at any point in movie history it was better than most things made.

I am truly lost at what you are trying to ask/make a point about
Posted on 6/22/25 at 11:15 am to wildtigercat93
New over priced hollywood, mostly crappy product, you try to give an excuse for it when there is none.

One huge factor is the cost of talent. “Stars” want star money…
Plus production costs have soared since “Jaws” was made. Equipment,
locations, expert crew, etc.

Sorry my frustration wasn't pointed at you. It's at all the BANG BOOM and pay this star, instead of writing and story.
