I'm amazed that it got pretty weak reviews. I think it's the funniest show hbo has had in awhile. I could also see the characters returning. But with the cast it has, that could make things tough to film.

The Brink is good stuff. I give it a A-/B+.
Ballers is entertaining enough to keep you watching. C+/-
S2 of True Detective is an unmitigated disaster thus far. Basically the folks saying the casting was terrible and that Nic P. was a one hit wonder are being proven correct so far. F

See I just watch Ballers for what it is - a football version of Entourage. The Rock is very charismatic and carries the entire show. Toss in some nudity and wise cracks and you have the tried and true formula for a popular show.
Something else I haven't seen mentioned is the timing of airing Ballers. We're in the doldrums of summer for the sports year and the NFL season is fast approaching. Ballers is the perfect time killer to whet the football fan's appetite during the doldrums.
