It is one of the 10 greatest movies ever made.
Reading the thread about “recent movies becoming a classic” in 30 years is there one single movie mentioned that even compares? I don’t think so. Lol @ Mad Max Fury Road...which I like, but come on. It’s not Smokey and the Bandit.
Gleason’s performance was a thing of beauty. The banter and “romance” between Sally and Burt. Jerry Reed as the ultimate side kick (not to mention singing one of the greatest theme songs ever). The father/son relationships between Big & Little Enos and Buford T Justice & Junior.
It’s the 20th century version of Greek mythology.
The “acting” was perfect - I use the quotes to signify that the characters were in part the actors themselves “becoming” the caricature and thereby bringing depth to the characters. .
The plot is simple and straight forward. The action is gratuitous and over the top, but not over the top.
Heck, if I keep going on it might be a top 5 movie....

It was a movie that knew exactly what it wanted to be, and then pulled it off.
I will get some heat for saying this, but that is one reason I still enjoy watching "The Princess Diaries". Was it an all time great? No. But it knew exactly what it wanted to be and pulled it off. That is refreshing.
They should flog film makers every time they deviate from this rule: figure out what sort of movie you want to make and then doing everything possible to pull it off.
Are you making a comedy? Make damn sure it is funny and then you can sprinkle in a dramatic scene or two. Are you making a horror? Well it sure as hell better scare or unnerve people first and foremost.
