The first 20 minutes of Jeepers Creepers scared the crap out of me for some reason. Then it became laughable like most horror flicks.

+1. This movie had some scary potential, but went downhill quickly.

Halloween is still my all time winner, but age at the time of watching probably plays a big part in that.

Definitely. That scene when the aliens are dragging him down the hall and strap him to the table. Definitely scary.

Exorcist and The Omen, too

When I was a kid, I thought Poltergeist was the scariest. Not so sure what I would say now. But I do find it hard to watch The Grudge.

I recently saw Halloween for the first time and I must say it does not hold up at all nowadays. I found it not at all scary. I think you had to see it back then or as a kid to get it.

The only thing that has ever really scared me was Blair Witch because it is relatable...if you've ever been truly lost in the woods when night is falling you will know what I mean.

The Exorcist is the scariest I've ever scene. It's even more fricked up if you have any religious values whatsoever.

When this movie debuted in 1972 theater patrons were leaving midway through to puke and faint in the lobby. Wes Craven has been quoted as saying that when he first saw this movie he knew the director had no morals. This movie pushed boundaries that still aren't touched in today's cinema.

When it was re-released with "never before seen footage" a few years ago I took my wife to see it for the first time. We sat behind two relatively studly gentlemen watching with their girlfriends. After the scene where Reagan walks down stairs on all fours backwards with blood pouring from her mouth one of the men stood up, turned to the group and said "Why people gotta make movies like this. Give me the keys...yall page me when it's done," then left his girlfriend and the other couple.

This movie doesn't have today's special effects (even though it was cutting edge in '72). To me it's just more real that way. This movie is seriously fricked up.

That is a totally unaltered scene too - just some gymnast who can do that freaky crap.

Also, did you know that in the scenes where it is very cold in the room and you can see the actors' breath ... they actually filmed those scenes in a refrigerated studio. It was literally freezing (or damn near it) in there. The actors were miserable because obviously they couldn't dress warmly - particularly Reagan who was in a nightgown.

You and I have the same thoughts about scary movies.
After poltergeist I always had to close my closet door and never had a stuffed animal in sight.

The grudge gave me chills like no other movie has since poltergeist.

(I know this I'm setting myself up for the obvious but...)

After watching "Poltergeist" I was scared to look in the mirror for a while.

It's funny that back then when you're a kid you get scared shitless but when I watch them today I almost think how stupid the movie/special effects are. No particular oder, here's my Top 5 movies.

Rosemary's Baby (1967)

Mommy's sweet little boy...

Got to see where part of the movie was filmed at The Dakota apt building last year when I went to NYC.

The Exorcist (1973)

Is anybody home?

Theme song Tubular Bells by Mike Oldfield is still a classic.

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974)

You better run...

Carrie (1976)

Lady in red...

Halloween (1978)

Hi there...

The best horror movie theme song ever!

I actually like Tubular Bells better, but barely.

I remember Burnt Offerings scarring the heck out of me as a kid, but almost laughed at it when I watched it several months ago.

I saw The Exorcist for the first time a few years ago, and I thought it was pretty good. But I had a hard time finding where it was scary. I don't believe in demonic possession, and this movie was based on a novel that was based on a story the guy heard. It was not "based on a true story."

I think part of it is that even with all of the make-up, Reagan still does not look scary to me. I found myself laughing at the lines like "Do you see what your cunting daughter did?" and "Let Jesus frick you" just because I didn't think she was very convincing. I liked the movie because of a great performance by Jason Miller as Father Karras and the way the demon causes him psychological torment. I've even watched this movie again twice, in my room at night with the lights out, and I go to sleep feeling like I've seen a good film rather than a gripping horror movie. Maybe you had to see it when it came out, I don't know.

I actually found some of the other Exorcist movies to be scarier, but not nearly as good as the original.

As for scariest movies, Pet Sematary threatened my sanity and The Thing made fear grip me any time my stomach rumbled as a child.
