Meant to start this thread a few days ago but I forgot. Anyway, I watched this movie last week and I had a general idea that it was about a rivalry between two Formula 1 racers. That was about the extent of my knowledge. I am not a big racing fan and I don't know much about Formula 1, but I think this movie was pretty good.
The intense rivalry between James Hunt and Niki Lauda was much more dramatic than I knew, and I had no idea Niki Lauda was involved in such a gruesome crash. The scenes of his recovery were very difficult to watch.
Speaking of Niki Lauda, he was portrayed by Daniel Bruhl, who some people may better remember from Inglorious Basterds as the glorified German sniper who was said to have killed over a hundred allied soldiers. He does a fantastic job in this movie as Lauda.
In the end, it's a great movie with a great message. The moral of the movie is about the competition between two individuals and in the end, even though they act hostile to each other, they realize that they need each other to bring out the best in one another (Hunt being a partying ladies man with more natural talent for racing and Lauda being a calculating, risk-driven driver who is almost addicted to winning). The ending indicates they had a tremendous amount of respect for one another. Give it a shot if you were on the fence about it.

I thought it was a really good movie.
However, I did not walk away with the impression that they hated each other. I think the media spun it that way, but I think they actually had a huge amount of respect for each other.

Oh yeah you are right they definitely did. My favorite line of the movie was at the end when Lauda says "He remains, to this day, the only man I have ever envied."
Love that shite

Yeah...Rush actually did a pretty good job of sticking to the truth, but they did embellish the rivalry aspect just a tad. They never hated or disliked one another. You saw that in the archival footage at the end of the film. They were there, leaning up against a wall, smiling and talking to each other.
The same thing was made of the Gordon-Earnhardt rivalry in the 1990s. The press wanted to make us think they hated one another when, in fact, they had a pretty good relationship off the track.
