The cast assembled so far includes:

Woody Harrelson as Admiral Chester Nimitz
Luke Evans as Lieutenant Commander Wade McClusky
Patrick Wilson as Rear Admiral Edwin Layton
Mandy Moore in an unnamed role
Ed Skrein in an unnamed role
Dennis Quaid in an unnamed role
Nick Jonas in an unnamed role
Aaron Eckart in an unnamed role

There was a casting call on Pearl Harbor that I missed for extras a couple weeks back. They were only asking for U.S. military personnel. I believe they begin shooting on Oahu in September.

This will make Michael Bay’s Pearl Harbor look like Dunkirk.

Hmmmmm...
I mean... midway was a great naval battle, turned the tide of the war in the Pacific.
On the other hand.. stargate was a fun movie..
Maybe it will be like the patriot. Good popcorn flick yet wildly historically inaccurate.

Is this the one where the alien mothership destroys Hiroshima?

At best it will be entertaining, and more likely extremely insulting. Roland Emmerich is the worst major film maker of the modern era. Michael Bay puts some effort on good shots, but Emmerich doesn’t give a frick.

I think with some of the names signed on it should be pretty entertaining.
I mean, mandy Moore only does quality movies..

Tell me General, why should I trade 1 suicide bomber 3,000 miles away for 3,000 suicide bombers 1 mile away?

Yeah...I'm going to have to disagree with you there. His two worst movies were Godzilla and Independence Day: Resurgence - both films more highly watchable than Pearl Harbor. Michael Bay has only made one good film over the course of his whole career (The Rock).

Stargate, Independence Day, The Patriot, and Anonymous are all good films that Emmerich directed. And while I admit The Patriot is one of the most blatantly historically inaccurate big budget films to ever come out of Hollywood, it's much better than anything Michael Bay has ever done.

Good cast, but for frick's sake....if we're gonna get a film concerning one of our Navy's finest hours and the turning point of the Pacific theater, can't we get a good director? Almost anyone would be better.

What's next, the Battle of Leyte Gulf, directed by Paul W.S. Anderson?

The great military historian John Keegan has said about the Battle of Midway:

“The most stunning and decisive blow in the history of naval warfare.”

“They had no right to win. Yet they did, and in doing
so they changed the course of a war. More than that, they added a new name – Midway – to that small list that inspires men by example, like Marathon, the Armada, the Marne."

Even against the greatest odds, there is something in the human spirit – a magic blend of skill, faith and valor – that can lift men from certain defeat to incredible victory.”

btw, The footage of the attack on Midway Island was shot by John Ford. Which is used in all the documentaries on this subject.

This topic deserves a deft hand.

I enjoy, but don’t love, the 1976 film. I’ve wanted someone to make another movie on this battle, but underwhelmed that Emmerich will direct. One of the worst aspects of the 1976 movie is all the generic stock footage used. I assume that’s going to be replaced by CGI.

One thing that gives me solace is that Emmerich will probably make a point of showing how insane it would be to be in a dive bomber. I always thought that the tail gunner in a Dauntless or Helldiver had one of the worst jobs in the war. Imagine going into a steep dive that you had no control over, facing up while the plane was screaming downward. Of course, the pilots didn't have it much easier. It would take balls of pure steel to maintain a dive into the teeth of a Jap aircraft carrier's anti-air batteries.
