I just got back from seeing it. Tears flowed most of the movie. Like OP I can relate a lot to the early years and life of this story. Not the gay part at all.
Life is precious. We all NEED love...especially in early formative years. We will go about looking for it in wrong places or things if we have to.
I wish I did have family members to reach out to. Unfortunately, I don't have a single blood relative remaining on the planet. Super weird emotion I can't describe.
If you have any young people in your life make an extra effort to love them.
