Great movie with major plot holes after another rewatch.
And a lot of the jokes have continuity problems as Steve Martin can only see things once its the object of a joke.
He doesn't notice the bathroom a mess and only a hand towel left until after he gets out of the shower? What was he looking at as he got in the shower?
He doesn't notice Del's socks in the sink until after he washes his face?
The movie is full of jokes that rely on the camera "surprising" the protagonist.
Neal is actually the camera in the movie where he is the suspension of disbelief magical reveal for the audience while Del plays it straight.

I saw somewhere the car rental scene took it from a PG rating to an R rating. John Hughes insisted on the scene, despite the fact the movie probably lost money going to R rating. That is true dedication to an art.
