no but it sounds like something they might add to the story to help it be taken "seriously", they have no real value for entertainment.

Yes, because providing background, immersion, and a more fleshed out and developed world in no way affects entertainment value.

And no one took the approach of making this a "serious" film, from Guillermo all the way down. This was purely driven by an immense passion for the project; their only goal was to create a fun, action-oriented/love letter to the genre movie where giant mechs beat the shite out of giant monsters and they totally succeeded.
