This comic book fad doesn't have an ending, does it? My God.

Westerns dominated for like 50 years. Sorry bub. You're shite out of luck. Comics are here to stay.

Just from a business perspective, why should it?

Familiarity- if you're unfamiliar with the material, you might not watch something you'd otherwise enjoy. I think this is what happened to the John Carter movie; most people who have ended up seeing it loved it. They couldn't figure it out in time to catch it in the theaters.
Comic books have iconic characters, so you're good to go if you can associate it with them. Oh, it's in the Superman/Batman universe- ok, I know that.

Action blockbusters- it's perfect. I can make a Die Hard movie, put a superhero in it, and that just means I can add MORE effects.

Setting- most are set on modern-day Earth, so your sets can be just any normal location. You can't do that with Star Wars or Lord of the Rings. You CAN make Batman in downtown Chicago.

I'm pretty sure that the people that are eating this crap up have been brainwashed into thinking that they never have to grow up and there's always going to be a woke superhero around the corner to save the day.
