Why did the Joker always change his story as to how he got the scars on his face?

And in the original comoic, how did he get the scars?

That's what I figured, but I wasn't sure if there was a back story in the comic.

I don't think there's a logical answer to that question. The question "Why?" doesn't apply to the joker because he didn't really have any reason to do any of the things that he did.

the way i interpreted it was that people have a need to have an explanation for things. a reason for the way things are.

by never allowing you to know why he is the way he is he throws a little more chaos into the minds of the people he is trying to terrorize

The point was to show that he had no origin, no reason to be why he is like he is now, so as far as the viewer knows he has always been like that. This is the first time i've seen the joker with scars and i must say it's WAAAAY better than the original.

The "falling into a vat of acid" story came later, I believe. I'm not sure what the original story was, if there even was one.

In the comics, his origins changes with the writers. The line you are referring to, is a nod to a comic called "The Killing Joke" in which the Joker tells his origins, in different tales, to the point that he doesn't even know how he truley came about. It was Nolan's way of paying tribute to the different origin stories.

Most incarnations have him falling into chemicals, alot have him being a guy down on his lock trying to provide for his family, who just has one bad day.

In the original, the Joker was a mob boss. He was shot through the face (both cheeks) and received those scars.

Two face is the one who was burned by acid.
