I haven't watched S1 yet, but can I assume the cartel they follow is the Mexican cartel that was recruiting the gay guy from the Cali cartel in Columbia? Looked like the gay guy in the trailer, but I thought he was killed in prison?

Narcos Mexico preceeds the Colombian Narcos series. They're following the Sinaloan Cartel.

Timeline wise? Or did I just watch them backwards?

Timeline. The DEA agent in Mexico was killed in 1984. Escobar was killed in 1993.

I started season one and for whatever reason was slow to get into it. Then I got busy and forgot about it. I am about halfway through and need to finish it. I lobe the show, and the three Narcos seasons were all fantastic.

I remember thinking after Pablo it would not be as good. Boy was I mistaken

Mexico was better than the Pablo season s although Pablo was the best character. I'm pumped for this.
