Down to 61% on RT.

Some are calling it the biggest disappointment of the year.

The last time a big budget superhero flick focused on character development, Spider-Man 3 was the result. I don't need a deep serious plot with twists and turns and long drawn out dialogue scenes in a superhero flick. Give me a coherent, focused story with dialogue that is purposeful and non-cheesy with action that puts me in awe.

I'm sorry but Spider-Man 3 has zero character development and was not focused on it what so ever. It's actually the opposite. The Dark Knight and Iron Man are the perfect examples of character development within the Super Hero movie genre. A great balance of action and story. Based off the first couple trailers this looked to be similar to those but the last few have been all about the action and that's the consensus of the reviews so far.

I can't wait to see it on Saturday but my expectations have been lowered and I know what to expect out of the dialogue.

Then watch Batman. Superman isn't a brooding antihero. He's the bright light we should all be moving towards.

Seen it. So now I want to see superman in a similar manner.

They could be saving character development for the second one.

I am not as excited to see this film as I was for Iron Man, Avengers, Spiderman, or Batman. I wont go out of my way to go see it.

Agreed.

they "liked it" as a summer blockbuster, but it was missing substance

Warner Bros burned through millions in the 90's and early 2000's on Superman projects that were stuck in development Hell. Superman Returns failed to meet any of their expecatations. WB probably approached Man of Steel with the thought that they were going to finally make some money this time.

After watching Returns, I thought it would've been better to have a somewhat generic Superman movie first because it'd been nearly 20 years since he was last on the big screen. The sequels should've been his return to Krypton/Kid/etc. If Man of Steel is truly a summer popcorn flick, that doesn't mean the groundwork can't be laid for more movies that do have the substance and themes that we're all looking for.

No thanks. I'm going to watch this badass version of Superman and love it.

This. It's weird, the good reviews have me concerned and the bad reviews have me excited

From what I have read, I think I am going to really like this film.

Also, I detect a serious combination of Snyder bashing and Donnor fluffing in the negative reviews.

ETA: Here's why I am not worried. Even though presently at 58% on RT ("rotten"), here's the consensus from the website:

Superman's return to the big screen is mostly successful, as Man of Steel provides enough exhilarating action and spectacle to overcome its occasional detours into generic blockbuster territory. (emphasis added)

I've been sensing this movie would be very thin on character development and substance since Cavill and Adams, you know the two main characters, have had like a total of 2-3 lines in all the trailers.

With that said, I'm sure it's still a fun action-packed summer movie.

I think Snyder got ripped for Watchmen so much that he gave in and made a big action popcorn flick.

I'd be willing to bet he had to. They're not aiming for just success, they're aiming for multiple billions of dollars with this franchise.

hearing the criticisms of Returns, you have to right that wrong and try to blow this out of the water.

I'd be willing to bet that there's a lot more character exploration in the next few, but this one just had to be something that got people around the world excited about again.

Normally that wouldn't be a bad thing, but man those first few trailers that came out made it seem like there was going to be a lot of character development which apparently isn't the case

which makes sense for a first movie in my opinion (maybe I'll change my mind after I see it)

but Superman's universe actually spans the universe. Character development seems too much when trying to get this off the ground. First you have Superman's struggle, but you also have Krypton's back story- Lois, Ma and Pa Kent, the bad guy...etc. That's a hell of of a lot of stuff to try to cover fully in one movie considering that you also need lots of stuff to go kablooie

what has me so excited about this right now is this is how I've always thought it should be done. First one is getting everything set up, let us have fun watching Superman be Superman and then really construct the people and relationships around him in the following movies.

maybe that won't happen, but that's what it seems like to me so far.

I don't know why I'm enjoying watching this movie plummet. I have no stake in it and I don't plan on seeing it. No idea.

What didn't you like about it? It was as close to the graphic novel as it could be. The only problem I saw in it was the sex scene in Archie. That felt really out of place and not needed.

As a whole though the movie was good and I think the overall review sums it up nice.

Gritty and visually striking, Watchmen is a faithful adaptation of Alan Moore's graphic novel, but its complex narrative structure may make it difficult for it to appeal to viewers not already familiar with the source material.
