I think it was a masterpiece except I'm not sure exactly WTF I watched. Someone explain the end with the creepy baby fetus.

I had the same exact questions when I watched it. Somebody will be along to explain

It' left open to interpretation. But I suspect that it's some form of evolution. That's what the whole movie is about. Now, humans are evolving into demi-gods of some sort. haha, idk

Something something conception.

The obelisk advances Dave's evolution (as it did with the apes) and he becomes the star child. In the book, he is physically staring down on the earth, and detonates an orbiting nuclear device. It's an ominous ending, not knowing what this advanced being will do next.
In the film it appears to be more of a visual representation of Dave evolving and turning his attention to earth. In the book it's an actual event.

I hated that movie like I have hated few other movies.

I respect that movie for being ahead of its time and being a "masterpiece". At the same time it may be the one of the most boring movies I've ever seen.

#3 stages
The movies begins with the monolith accelerating the evolution of apes. After contact, they begin to use tools.
Once ape/man has evolved to the point at which it can identify a magnetic field under the surface of the moon, and dig it up, sunlight hits the second monolith.
That is the trigger for the third monolith. Dave is the first ape/man to come into contact with the third monolith which accelerates his evolution into the star child. At this point, he also "joins" with the monolith.
The monoliths are machines previously left by other intelligent life to develop/force other forms of life into a evolutionary path driven by intelligence rather than other physical advantages.
Spoilers- In the sequel 2010, we see the monolith starting the process again on Europa.
In the book 3001, We find out that the monoliths need to be destroyed because they also can judge whether the life they have developed, is a failure that needs to be restarted.
God help us, I have just read that Scifi channel is making a mini-series of 3001.

2010 was a solid follow-up with it's timely cold-war setting, and Keir Dullea looked spookily the same. It had a good narration by Scheider at the end:
quote:
I still don’t know really what the monolith is. I think it’s many things. An embassy for an intelligence beyond ours. A shape of some kind for something that has no shape.
