I just finished. When this thread was made I went to see where it was streaming and it went to Prime just after this thread was made, so just FYI, anyone wanting to watch, it's on Prime.
I think this may have been DV's first real movie (I don't think Polytechnique had a real budget and wasn't it a student film?) and his visual talent was already highly developed out of the gate.
I will say, I purposefully didn't read anything about this movie once I was told about it, but I knew there was a twist. Since I knew there was some big twist, I was able to pretty much guess it by the time the daughter interviewed the "janitor" (the whole thing up through the present and the letters she wrote).

Nothing about the story was realistic or possible.
Funny enough, a lot of this was based on a real woman, but they added the twist for some Greek tragedy, and to let the character write both letters (symbolism and meta commentary and all that).

Also, for a topic with many grey areas such as the Lebanese civil war, it was completely one-sided in portraying Christians as evil fricks and Muslims as innocent people just trying to live free.
You're showing a personal bias here. The Muslims looked pretty bad in parts.

The “twist” was more for shock factor than adding to the story.
I mean the primary theme is about the duality of a people separated by nothing more than artificial distinctions (religion and culture developed around it).
He got 2 letters to represent the literal duality at the forefront of this movie. He was literally both sides of the conflict.
