Godzilla vs. Kong, the forthcoming monster movie from Legendary Pictures, looks likely to be the latest big franchise movie to head to a streamer.

Knowledgeable sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that Netflix has made an offer of more than $200 million for the film while WarnerMedia has blocked the deal while preparing an offer of its own for its streamer, HBO Max. Legendary declined to comment while a Warner Bros. spokesperson said: "We plan to release Godzilla vs. Kong theatrically next year as scheduled."

Decisions on the movie’s fate are being handled at the highest level, with WarnerMedia CEO Jason Kilar and Warner Bros. chairman Ann Sarnoff figuring out an offer for a streaming release on HBO Max that in theory also includes a theatrical component. (On Nov. 18, WarnerMedia said that tentpole Wonder Woman 1984 would bow in theaters on Dec. 25 and be available to stream on HBO Max in a deal that Kilar described as "unprecedented.")

Why? We’ve got three vaccines coming out in the next few weeks & the movie isn’t supposed to release until May ? I refuse to believe this is legit, and I will be looking forward to seeing it in the theaters.

Why?

Because the Godzilla/Kong films keep underperforming in theaters.

If there’s any upcoming movie that deserves to be seen on the big screen in full 30 ft tall action it’s Godzilla vs Kong.

There have been three movies in the monster-verse, and only King of the Monsters really under performed. ( And much of that was because they showed too much of the movie , revealed too much of the monsters in the trailers. )

This likely would only go forward IF Wonder Woman 1984 does adequate. This is an option, but likely it'll be held until the big screens are available again.

This won't be going straight to streaming. It would kill the entire Monster-verse franchise. That's not happening if the studio can help it.

The poor box office returns would have done that anyway. King of the Monsters disappointed so much at the box office that Godzilla vs. Kong was pushed back to undergo extensive re-shoots and editing. I highly doubt the franchise will survive past the aforementioned sequel.

Godzilla (2014) made $200 million domestic on a $160 million budget. This was before studios started totally relying on foreign box office. The studio expected much more than a half billion from this relaunch.

Skull Island did even better internationally, but didn't even make its money back domestically. Again, the studio wanted much more than sub $600 million total. In 2017, this was an underperforming blockbuster.

Three movies in a row didn't break even in America. All were disappointing, the most recent was a disaster.

If Warner thinks they can somehow guarantee $300 million on HBO max (and I have no idea how they'd do that), it would save hundreds of millions in marketing costs, and it would be a safer gamble than the theater based on how this franchise has gone so far.

King of the Monsters was one of the most incompetently shot and edited blockbusters in recent memory (that I've seen, and I see many). You might not be wrong that the marketing sucked, but it's reasons for bombing are myriad.

I don’t know why it’s so hard for them to bring this all together. The CG designs are solid, the cast is pretty spot on, yet they get lazy with some fundamental stuff

King of the Monsters

Is a fun movie to watch with my 7yr old son. Fast forward through a few of the lulls and there are some nice monster action scenes.

All of these movies are good IMO. The 2014 Godzilla is borderline really good if it had the same amount of monster time as the others. I think people put too much thought in these movies. They need to just consist of Godzilla recking havoc and no integral human story line.

Yes exactly right. The movies get sidetracked with human stories we don’t care about.

Absolutely. I don’t give a frick how big you think your 60 inch TV set is and how many times Dolby is listed in the name of your surround system, it still won’t match the theater experience for this kind of movie.

Hbo max doesn't even support half the shite you'd need visually or acoustically to make it remotely worthwhile.

Because Transformers was made for the Mensa level movie fan, huh? Yet that still made someone some money and they kept cranking them out.

But some of the jokes in KOTM were so cringe, I think the writers thought they'd get credit for putting them in. They didn't.

Ghidorah sounds NOTHING like gonorrhea. Even I think that's lame and racist to even try to shove that line into the movie.
