also you can use the towerofthehand.com which has a great character index, be sure to set the scope to the books you have read to avoid spoilers.

Books are incredible (for most part)
as other have said - dreams and prophecies are important - so are some of the historical stories and references told.
Also remember that the chapters are told in point of view form and not as a narrator. What u read may be someones opinion or thoughts on things and not necessarily fact.

however I figure that things like "Ned pulled out his sword" were unambiguous enough to be fact whereas "the kingslayer is an arrogant bastard" is something less than fact.
Oh and to the OP - the houses do get a lot easier as time goes on. I never really used the houses list in back but I referee to the map often.
