I don't feel like they've deviated a great deal. There are some minor changes that are necessary for TV given the budget and the inability to narrate.

Martin started in television, so he understands how telling stories through TV are different than through a novel.

And they haven't, with a couple of exceptions (just finished Clash of Kings).

They have accelerated Jon's storyline a bit from the book. Doesn't matter because there is plenty to go around and for all we know, it could be taking place at the same time as the other stories.

The conversation b/w Jamie and Catelyn....didn't happen till late in the book. The show left out a bunch of spoilers that took place in the conversation (they weren't spoilers because of where it took place in the book).
