I prefer Rio Bravo. I really can't believe they were able to get away with making the same movie twice in under a decade.

Three times.

Rio Lobo.

And it's the best of the three.

(In more ways than one.)

By the way, the musical score for El Dorado was done by Nelson Riddle (who did the music for the Adam West Batman series). So during some of the scenes, you'll hear some very Batman-like music. Especially when John Wayne and company are skulking around the town at night.

The proctologist from Canonball Run is not equal to Mitchum or Martin so I don't think Lobo can be better based solely on Jennifer O'Neal.

We're not really discussing the actual quality of the movie, but the hotness of the women in them. However, Rio Bravo had Angie Dickinson who, in her prime, was smokin' even though she had poor trigger discipline on her Beretta.

BTW, Earl Holliman is from the big metropolis known as Bastrop, LA.

I forgot about her being in RL. I do remember her from Summer of '42.

Mitchum's son is in Rio Lobo, so that sweetens the deal.

Plus:
Sherry Lansing topless.

and George Plimpton as a stuntman.

But if anyone could do it Howard Hawks could.

Never understood why Michele Carey didn't become a bigger star. She was hot as a 3 dollar pistol that had just fired 5 dollars worth of ammo.

The same overall story was actually done 3 times by Howard Hawks and The Duke, and in 11 years. Rio Bravo (1959), El Dorado (1966) and Rio Lobo (1970).

Rio Lobo is my favorite of the 3, overall, and it has the somewhat detailed backstory of the CSA train heist, capturing the Duke as a yankee officer, etc.

But, the meat of all 3 stories are very, very similar, all directed by Hawks and all have Wayne in the leading role.

ETA: FK - just saw your Rio Lobo post.

Another interesting note is the screenplay for the story was written by Leigh Brackett who also wrote the screenplay for the Empire Strikes Back. As well as for The Big Sleep and The Long Goodbye which I think are both great.
