I read somewhere when he killed John Wayne in the Cowboys, it killed his career.

quote:

Bruce Dern turned in a stellar performance in The Cowboys. That wasn’t what made it hard for him to get work. In fact, he had no control over the aspect of the role that nearly tanked his acting aspirations. After that movie came out, fans branded him “The Man Who Killed John Wayne.” He was one of the most hated men in Hollywood.

Fans view of Dern

I'm watching Bonanza, and he's playing the same scumbag...

It was just his schtick. Take Silent Running, where he was the outright lead/protagonist. While he was a sympathetic figure, he wasn't really likeable.

He also played a scumbag in the west in Big Love. He plays a great a-hole.

He played an incredible scumbag.

For me, he didn’t pop up in a movie after The Cowboys until Django. I was like holy shite that’s the scumbag that killed John Wayne.

He’s seen a resurgence playing ancient guys lately, Tarantino loves him.

Thought this was Walton Goggins for a second.

Powers Booth has had a couple good Scumbag roles in more recent westerns.

I know it was just one movie, but Stephen Lang killed the scumbag role as Ike.

Our internet was out last night, so I had to go to the DVD collection and ended up watching The Burbs. I fricking love that movie and love Dern as Mr. Rumsfield.
