The acting was great, but the writing was not good. One second they were talking as people would back then, and the next they sounded like present day.
And Garfield’s wife did not drink. She wouldn’t even allow alcohol to be served at White House functions. Garfield did drink, but not much. And I seriously doubt Lucretia was dropping f-bombs.

for the TD history experts, how accurately does this show depict the way things were during that time?
It's fairly accurate but the language the characters use is very anachronistic to the time period. You wouldn't see people swearing like that in that era.

After watching the series I had to read the book. Excellent to put in mildly.
Insane Guiteau shot Garfiled. Dr. Bliss killed Garfield. The unreal hubris of that "physician" was infuriating.
The historical account delved more into Alexander Graham Bell's work to try to locate the bullet and save Garfield. Millard also tells more of the love & heartbreak that the country, his friends and staff have for their fallen President. Garfield's personality resonates more in the book, understandably so. Shannon was perfect for the role, as were the other supporitng actors.
Highly recommend for anyone who enjoyed the series.
