That seems like a terrible idea but I wonder if he had some part in wanting that to prove he wasn't scared or was tough enough.

I really doubt it was an idea of his. By the time he was sent there he was wheelchair bound and 89 yrs. old, so he had little to no defense for what happened to him.

Ah that makes sense. Kind of shitty of them to do that to him, but he was obviously no saint.
