Fwiw, I talked to an ex - marine today and asked about the black tape. He said that sometimes it's to piece together the two dog tags as not clank against each other and another reason is that marines tape up their tags if they've lost someone in their unit.

Cody probably has black tape on his dog tags because military dog tags have personal info on it like your freaking social security number on. I wouldn't want all off america to be able to freeze frame my dog tags and get my SS number off of them.
