Watched Episode 2 last night. Wow. I have to say this is really good. Julian Fellowes does not disappoint here. Belgravia moves at a faster pace than Downton Abbey, and the acting is top-tier. You forget quickly that you're watching paid actors deliver lines. It draws you in. The dialogue has a snappy edge to it and the story develops quickly. Very strong female roles. It's not all about the English snobbery. A lot of the focus is put on a middle-class English family trying to break into the upper-crust of society. There are moments of doing the right and honorable thing quickly followed by ambush and back-stabbing. And just like DA, there's a sub-story about the wait staff down below.

Alice Eve is first-class eye candy, but believe it or not, the first thing you'll notice is her very strong screen presence and superb acting ability. There are also hints of upcoming sexual escapades involving the aforementioned Ms. Eve.

There's one curious thing I noticed about one character, Ella Purnell as Lady Maria Grey, that I can't quite reconcile. It goes counter to my idea of the typical British gentry which is this: she has subtle African-American facial features (Mehgan Markle would approve). Or is it just me? Call me old fashioned. Don't get me wrong - she's a great actor, but she seems out of place compared to what I've grown used to seeing in DA. If my hunch is right, Fellowes has written this in for a reason. We'll see.

A great Rx for DA Withdrawl Syndrome. The bummer is that it's only 6 episodes total as opposed to a long-running Downton Abbey. It's free on Epix. Episodes 1 and 2.

Could have some Black Irish in her, or some Spanish.

BTW, we enjoyed the first episode. We lost power last night so we'll be seeing the second episode tonight.

It does rocket along at a very fast pace. We had to rewatch a couple of scenes to make sure we were getting everything. I couldn't figure out how a British family was sitting in their home within earshot of the Battle of Waterloo. Eventually we figured out they were living in the Netherlands.

I thought the same. But the effects were subtle - like the shaking of liquor in the bottle, etc. At least the sounds were muted just a bit. I'd have to think things were logistically tighter back then and the sounds of canons would carry a good way. Waterloo was 9.3 mi south of Brussels. Sounds about right....

This might help to explain why the Brits kept a presence in Belgium at the time: United Kingdom of the Netherlands

This series is chugging along nicely.

The "big secret" is almost funny now. So many people are focused on the mysterious cotton merchant that his secret identity should've been guessed by now. But still a fun game to watch.

The degenerate gambler vicar is my favorite character. His brother laughing throughout his sermon was hilarious.

I would have loved a prequel series to Downton based on Robert as a young man going to war (that way you get a younger Bates too), trying to find a way to save Downton and meeting Cora.

Fellowes has hinted that his Gilded Age HBO series set in the late 1800's will possibly reference Downton. It's set in New York, so possibly Cora's family will make an appearance.

After that he said he's doing a Downton sequel. So a true prequel is way down the line.

I had a similar thought, but given the time and place, I would expect the racial angle to lean toward India rather than Africa.

It's revealed in the final episode that her family's home is in Ireland, so I'm sticking to their being Black Irish.

This series wrapped up nicely, if as expected.

Some surprise heroes and a very villainous turn at the end.

This was a nice, light, Victorian soap opera. I can see us doing a rewatch in a year or two.

Is anyone watching the sequel series Belgravia: The Next Chapter? I see that Fellowes is just Exec. Producer on this round.
