It's gonna hafta be pretty damn good, though, cause I've been nailing my fantasy selections lately.

In the last month or so I've read:

1. Blood Song - First book in the Raven's Shadow trilogy. Incredible debut novel to say the least. Cannot wait for the follow-up in July, already pre-ordered!

I've got the paperback version of this sitting in my amazon queue for when it comes out in PB in a month or so, keep hearing great things.

Given how much fantasy you've read and how much you like Rothfuss I doubt you'll be blown away by Mistborn, but it's a solid series. And the magic system really is excellent and makes the books worth reading for that alone.

I'm a huge fan of Abercrombie, I think each book of that trilogy is better than the one before, and his three stand alone books set in the same world are better than the trilogy. Poor Ardee, she just gets the shaft for most of the series, but she is pretty cool. Of course it's Abercrombie, so nothing is going to be rainbows and unicorns.

Yea I hope it's not been built up too high, but I really liked it.

This is one of the things I'm most curious about so this alone will be worth it if it's as good as people say.

I'm intrigued. I've read the ASOIAF series and am looking for new very solidly written fantasy material.

When y'all mention "magic system", what do you mean?

It's not anywhere on the level of ASOIAF. You can tell he started it early in his career. It is fun to read, but it's not close to series like Martin, Rothfuss, Abercrombie and Lynch.

Basically just the rules for how magic works in the world the author has built Kills. Some books are very low magic (meaning there isn't much magic in the series at all) like ASOIAF, Joe Abercrombie's First Law trilogy and sequels, and Mark Lawrence's Prince trilogy would all fit under this heading. Low magic books typically don't have rules for their magic, and very little of it gets used in the books.

Sanderson's Mistborn, Steven Erickson's Malazan books, Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time would all be examples of high magic books that have large amounts of magic being thrown around. Stuff like Scott Lynch's Lies of Locke Lamora and Pat Rothfuss's Kvothe books would be more towards the middle.

I really liked Rothfuss's link system and thought it was well-developed so I'm really curious to see about this system everyone raves about!

Yea I really liked the second book, the third I'm not loving. I don't like the way they've handled the Bethod timeline, and it just seems like the focus has suddenly shifted to what I hadn't really perceived as the primary plot arc.

I'm definitley curious to see how they wrap everything up, though.
