Saw this at the Louisiana International Film Festival last night. Blew us away. I’m not big on mixing biographical film with documentary style interviews but this movie kicked arse.

Bumping this because it's at the Manship Theatre on June 24th. Hopefully it'll get a wider release soon. Great movie.

It's at the AMC's in Baton Rouge right now. Just saw it again in an almost empty little theater. Held up its intensity for the second viewing.

So apparently it did go to a lot more theaters starting yesterday, but still nothing near me. I live in silicon valley, where there are over a million people, and I still have to go 40 miles to the nearest showing (SF or Berkeley). The distance wouldn't be that bad if the traffic weren't so atrocious every day of the week.

Finally got to see this. It went into wider release on Friday June 22, but it didn't get to my area until a week later, June 29. I like the director's style, and he did a good job with the story. However I agree with some criticism I read that this movie rewards four guys who were simply bored (not desperate), after committing a violent crime, and even failing at it. Examining why seemingly good young men would ultimately agree to participate in a violent crime is certainly a valid project, but that could have been done in a standard documentary. Turning it into a dramatized caper movie I think opens it up to criticism.

That being said, the librarian who was attacked and bound, BJ Gooch (is that one of the greatest names ever?), says the film has helped her heal from the trauma. This is a great article to read after you see it:

Not sure how much they were rewarded, other than Spencer Reinhard getting some possible artist fees for his art that they've used in the promotion of the movie (they have a digital download of a coloring book with his shitty art).

In no way does the movie paint them as anything but idiots and assholes.

Apparently it’s already out of theaters in Baton Rouge. Was only there for maybe 3 weeks

True, but the documentary scenes near the end show them as reflective and remorseful. It gives them a shot at redemption. Meanwhile, the movie does not adequately describe how Gooch was traumatized by the crime and how she is still trying to recover. I think that information in the article I linked to should have been the ending of the movie. But again, Gooch had a positive reaction to the movie so that's good.

No. It was ok. To "Oh there just boys being boys" for me.

But I enjoyed the story.
