It’s so unbelievably quaint as viewed in 2022. I remember it was such a powerful movie in the 1970’s. The reporters were viewed as heroes.

Is anyone under the age of 45 even familiar with this movie?

I watched it about a month ago for the 1st time in over 10 years and was a bit taken aback by the juxtaposition of both 70s journalists vs those of today and Watergate vs the shite politicians pull today.

Watergate wouldn’t be a blip on today’s radar and 30-ish-year-old Woodward and Bernsteins don’t currently exist.

ETA—it took me out of the movie slightly, but still a great film. Damn I miss the grittiness of 70s era movies. Such a great era for film.

That teletype ending with the headlines of the convictions and then the resignation was so simple and yet so dramatic.

All The Presidents Men is one of the great paranoia thrillers of all time.

Its absolutely full if falsehoods, but it's still an incredibly well made film

Just reread the book and rewatched the film recently. The film feels like it’s missing the final reel. The decision to end it with Woodward and Bernstein being threatened still baffles me. The teletype ending is basically a text epilogue.

Still a great book and film.

William Goldman (credited w/the script, which won an Oscar) was no fan of the film. He claimed much of it was rewritten by other hands. Per Goldman Carl Bernstein himself and then-gf Nora Ephron even wrote a script draft. Goldman: "I can't speak for real life of course, but in the script they submitted, Bernstein was definitely catnip to the ladies."

The break-in might be a blip if the burglars fall on their swords, but the President on tape offering funding for obstruction of justice would still be huge.

This movie is a big part of why we have hyper partisan activist journalists who don’t just report. The first mainstream modern reporter as avenging super hero movie. If the story isn’t there to be uncovered then you gotta make one and report on it to have a profound impact on the political world. And you can visualize yourself as Robert Redford “righting wrongs” with the hair and strong chin

Hell, that’s how Bob Woodward actually sees himself. He’s STILL trying to live up to Redford’s portrayal.

Not sure why you were downvoted for a statement that is totally accurate.

As a kid in the 70s, just going by what you'd hear on the news, tv shows, and in "adult" conversations, you'd think that Watergate was the most horrible thing that ever happened to this country.

Ask an adult what it was and they'd usually tell you that you were too young to understand. Then you grow up and finally get the real story and it's like "That's it? This is what so many panties were in a wad over?"

I've been distrusting of Left leaning Boomers ever since.

Your fantasy world where Watergate was about a botched burglary is hilarious.

Agreed.

Also, your lack of recognition that the current Dem/MSM/Universities/Justice/Big Tech neo-communist oligarchy is miles worse than the smaller Military/Industrial complex that supported Nixon.

Why am I required to bring up specific contemporary "conspiracies" when discussing Watergate? And if we have to compare to specific conspiracy theories, why would it be restricted to one side of the political aisle?

In the first case, it’s not simply a theory if it’s proven to be true.

Secondly, the OP and others have commented that the movie represents a simpler time when the public was less jaded, and the corruption was a fraction of what it is today.

So, you want to emphasize the seriousness of Watergate but ignore the big picture of the corruption multiplied today? Expect to be called out.
