I always disliked Alien 3. But yesterday i watched a version a friend gave me called the assembly cut.
The movie has a lot of changes.
The alien comes out a Ox or cow not a dog. But they also paced the story better.
If your a fan of alien and Aliens look for the assembly cut of Alien 3. They have it on youtube and other places. But it's not the version on Hulu D+.
I actually liked it more and it changes my rating of Alien3.

When we look back on something like this, I mean, this was David Fincher's feature debut. Walter Hill cowrote the script with Giler and and Larry Ferguson. Gordon Carroll produced it with Hill and Giler.
That should have been a better film in theaters. There were elements to like about it, but it just didn't hold together.
That would have been Chenoweth's final film as cinematographer, if had been able to finish it. I don't think he, alone, could have saved it, no more than Alex Thomson really has any blame.
They went through A LOT of drafts, which didn't help. I thought the cast was fine - Weaver and Dutton were solid (I mean, the material was the material). You go down the list of supporting - Dance, Glover, Brown, Webb, etc., these were all really good actors.
The problems started and ended with the script, IMHO. Sometimes, it just misses and nothing can fix it.
(ETA: Obviously, I haven't seen this Assembly Cut - so-called because Fincher refused to participate in a director's cut. However, this does happen - Ridley, in particular, The Final Cut of Blade Runner is probably the finest "director's cut" ever, and his DC of Kingdom of Heaven is an outstanding improvement over the theatrical as well.)

My biggest problem with Alien 3 is that Charles Dance's character is killed off way too early. He was the best character in the film.

Kingdom of Heaven directors cut is another movie better than original.
My biggest gripe with alien 3 is that it erased the point of aliens. Newt died everyone died Except Ripley and a face hugger figured out how to open a sealed cyro chamber, implant and then run off to die so no one found it. Which is unlike what aliens have done in the past.
I get Newt aged out and the actress didn't want to act anymore but Bishop could have been done better. Hicks dying too pissed me off.
I saw Alien 3 in theaters and remember being upset and let down. But what followed was so bad its not so bad in retrospect.

He really is and he just gets killed in such a dumb way.
Also that xenomorph seemed to want to get a maximum body count. Like he one in the new tv show

This is actually the only version of Alien 3 I've ever seen and I love it

Alien 3 biggest sin is that it’s fricking boring. I know what they were *trying to do - go back to a more deliberate pace like the first movie. But guess what? That first movie is never boring and despite it being a slow burn it deliberately paces out the tension with interesting characters, beautiful set pieces, and a constantly shifting story. Alien 3 is a depressing drag that is a bitch to watch. Doesn’t help the fact that it follows one of h the most exciting action movies of all time.
Despite a generational director (who was hired as an unknown to be bossed around since the producers had a handful working with James Cameron) and a cast of wonderful character actors, the movie is still a bore.
