I often see new theater releases but they aren't being shown in the main cinemas. Recent examples are "Wont you be my neighbor?", "Izzy Gets the F#$@# Across Town," etc.

Are there are theaters near Baton Rouge that show these movies?

You'll have to search theater to theater. Your best bet in BR is the Manship Theater downtown or Perkins Rowe. Viewings are pretty limited

Get on the Manship Theater e-mail list or follow them on Facebook.

Become a member of the Louisiana International Film Festival. You'll get free showings of movies now and then, then you have the big festival in April with dozens of indie movies and documentaries at Perkins Rowe. Or at least get on their mailing list. They were the ones showing Won't You be My Neighbor last night at Perkins Rowe last night.

American Animals is playing Sunday at the Manship. I saw it at the La. International Film Festival in May, it's a great film.

Sometimes indy movies with a little buzz will play on one screen for a week or two at one of the theaters in town. You just have to keep an eye out for them.

Where are you located? There are usually 1-2 film festivals going on in any given part of a state each season. There’s one in Hattiesburg ending Friday.

I miss the days of going to UA Siegen to watch Mike Leigh and Hal Hartley indie films in the ‘90s.

We were discussing that the other night. We were watching Sideways on TV and began to list all of the indie movies that we'd seen at UA Siegen.

And when The Varsity was in its last years as a movie theater, they were a go-to for indie films.

I almost mentioned seeing Sideways there, too, but I inexplicably forgot Payne’s name. They also showed Citizen Ruth.

Siegan was an oasis in a city otherwise historically anemic in indie films.

The theater was rarely packed, but they had small crowds there.

I've been to indie movies at Perkins Rowe and I was the only person in the theater.

It might have to do with people having much easier access to films today than they did in the days of UA Siegen and Blockbuster.

I'm near Baton Rouge. I do go to the festival each year. I was hoping I could see these more frequently, though.
