She didn't drop it on purpose. She got straight annihilated at the plate by kit. You can see it in a shot immediately following the ump calling safe. Dottie is laying on the ground dazed after the play.

did she get knocked out by getting hit in the midsection? her hand is completely open as the ball rolls out...either she got knocked out or she let it go...the first time she hits the ground she holds on to it just fine

Dude, that was a slow motion zoom in scene for dramatic effect. They wanted to make the ball coming free the last part of the dramatic play at the plate and that was the only way to do it. Please stop using that to disregard all of the contextual evidence. I can't believe you would use that as the crux of your argument.

there are a lot of other things i listed...They made Dottie out to be awesome the whole movie. She could have made that play with her hands behind her back doing a split

+1

I never really considered the idea of her dropping it on purpose until I saw it discussed on this site. It just seems out of character for Dottie to tank a play, I think Kit earned this one.

It's in my top 10 favorite movies without a doubt. I absolutely love it. Personally I think it's obvious that she didn't drop it on purpose but I hope people see that I'm obviously being tongue in cheek with my tone.

what is the point of the scene at the beginning of the movie if not to hint at the ending?

Hanks was great...and let me tell you, i want to believe she didn't drop it on purpose cause Kit got on my nerves in this movie. i wanted dottie to win and make the play...I definitely didn't want her to give the game away, but sadly, i think she did.

Maybe this strong anti-Kit feeling is actually exactly why you believe she DID drop it on purpose. You said it yourself, you wanted Dottie to win. She was the best. You couldn't stand Kit. So you want to believe that Kit only got it because Dottie let her rather than that underdog, whiny Kit, who no doubt had heart and talent, beat her sister on that play.

she did have heart and talent, but not like dottie...dottie was playing with the league the whole time. like i said, earlier in the movie, she made the same play. no problem...making split catches. hittin homers...she catches the baseball with bare hand. she was that much better than everybody, including kit. that's who they made her out to be.

...only way this supreme player blows that play in that big a moment is on purpose imo.

It hints at the whole movie. The movie depicted Kit being overshadowed by Dottie from the beginning and Dottie always being cold to understanding Kit's perspective and writing off her complaints. It may have hinted at the basic notion of a conflict between the two at the end that Dottie learned from, but how someone interprets that as indicating that she let Kit win is beyond me. I'd like to see how you could find a clear logical correlation for jumping to that conclusion.

wasn't kit supposed to be unlikable? she didn't irritate you at times in the movie?

but that's just the beginning. It's that compounded with everything else that leads me to that conclusion

Here is the root of the issue. I can't even remotely say I agree with this mindset. Did you ever play competitive sports? Dominant players don't always win. On any given play, you can beat someone who is better than you, especially if we are talking about baseball and a play at the plate at that.

Dottie was the best player in the league, but she was human. She got beat on that play at the plate. And that's that. Kit finally triumphed.

Like what? The context supports the exact opposite being the case.

At times, sure. She was the younger sibling and not as good as her sister. She always felt in the shadow of Dottie, both on and off the field.

But you seem to be letting your dislike for someone and desire to see someone else win cloud your objective judgment. You see this issue all the time with fans of sports teams. They can never come to terms with the fact that another team simply won. There is always an excuse, they always have a really biased perspective on penalties, calls, etc. that go against them.

It is irrelevant to me whether I like Kit or not as to how I view the context of that final game and play.

ya, not baseball....but it's a movie. players aren't gonna be doing splits and catching balls with their hat either...in the movie, i think they made dottie to be that good--infallible on the field.

the best support for this imo was at the end when after the game dottie reiterated to Kit, "lay off the high ones". it was a reference back to the beginning and to what just happened...Kit had clearly just hit an inside the park game winning home run on a high one...

sure, but i think i can say that i'm not that attached to either side to let it cloud my judgment.
