The blacksmith is so much hotter than the main girl.

That was by design. Ginger and Mary Ann syndrome, Veronica and Betty or Jennifer and Bailey (f*ck me, I'm old.)

I can't believe this movie only has a 58% on Rotten Tomatoes.

I always thought the music was kind of funny but I read a couple weeks ago that the director chose the music because he wanted the audience to be as pumped up by the music as someone in the Middle Ages would with some guy humming away at the lute.

The music is what ruins the movie for me.

The final product is a combination that is just viscerally off-putting to some. I even felt it during my first viewing. However, the characters were genuine and, although a bit formulaic and predictable, the acting was excellent - whether that was talent (Tudyk is always excellent, as Ledger generally was as well - the rest of the cast held their own or better), directing or some combination.

I had few expectations, but I enjoyed the movie. I think that was my introduction to Heath Ledger, at least in any sort of significant role.

Yeah, the deliberate anachronism aspect of the movie just turned me off, couldn't really get past it. Great cast, but I couldn't really get into it.

This is what I think should be done. Some enterprising fans should compose an alternate score, with medieval sounding music and/or classical music, ala Williams, and see if the film isn't received better.

I was a little put off by the score at first, but, since I happen to like most of the rock musical selections, it grew on me. When it became clear that nobody was taking the film too seriously (the Chaucer character, particularly, makes it seem all like a show, anyway), it ultimately works, in context.
