This is true. The Sahara Desert and rudimentary sailing ships made contact with lower Africa pretty difficult. And the Romans were pretty ethnocentric and prejudiced against people outside of Rome. Hell, they were dead set against accepting their fellow Italians as equals and fought hard to keep barbarians from France and Germany settling south of the Alps. Sudan and Eritrea most definitely traded w/ Rome through Egypt. While the Denzel character does not make sense from the trailer maybe there is some plausible connection. He is a great actor so i don't really mind.
